Kalejdoskop startade på hösten 1975 som en tidskrift för internationell samtidskonst och fick snabbt prenumeranter över hela Skandinavien. Redan efter något år utvidgades verksamheten med de första bokutgivningarna. Tidskriften utkom därefter med sex nummer per år under ett helt decennium, och upphörde först 1985. Utöver de mycket blandade häftena utgavs varje år temanummer med fokus på särskilda fenomen inom bildkonsten, som Dikt & Bild (fyra gånger), Konceptkonst i Norden, Modern konst i Afrika, Särlingar i konsten, Konstnärsböcker, Japanskt kalejdoskop, Konkret kalejdoskop, isländsk och holländsk samtidskonst samt Videokonst. Dessutom specialnummer kring enskilda konstnärer och fotografer som Frederick Sommer, Richard Long, George Maciunas, Franco Leidi, Lucien Clergue, Robert Smithson, Folke Dahlberg, Joan Miró och Manuel Alvarez Bravo.

Bokutgivningen fortsatte fram till 1998 då Marianne och Sune Nordgren, som drivit förlaget tillsammans i 23 år, flyttade till England. Sammanlagt publicerades under dessa år, förutom tidskriften, cirka 150 titlar: konstnärsmonografier, konstteori, illustrerade böcker och artists’ books. Bland de allra första var en bok om skivomslag och konstnärsböcker av Richard Long och Susan Weil. Bland de allra sista finns böcker om Eric Grate, Otto G Carlsund, Lena Cronqvist och om August Strindberg som fotograf. Många böcker utkom i tvåspråkiga utgåvor, där svenskan kompletterades med engelska, tyska, franska eller italienska. Flera utgavs även i en bibliofil utgåva, där konstnären bidragit med originaltryck eller originalillustrationer.

Kalejdoskops utgivning stannade av 1998 och en stor del av lagret såldes ut. Under 2009 startade förlaget upp igen av dottern Ellen Nordgren. Förlaget drivs numera av Ellen, Sune, Marianne, Isac och Amanda Nordgren.

 

Kalejdoskop started in the autumn 1975 as a magazine of international contemporary art and quickly gained subscribers all over Scandinavia. After only a year it expanded its operations with the printing of the first book. The magazine was published with six issues per year over a full decade, and ceased only late 1985. In addition to the magazines with a mixed content, every year theme issue were released focusing on specific phenomena in the visual arts, such as Poetry & Image (four times), Conceptual Art in the Nordic countries, Modern art in Africa, Outsider Art, artists’ books, Japanese kaleidoscope, Icelandic and Dutch contemporary art and Video Art. Furthermore, special issue were published on individual artists and photographers like Frederick Sommer, Richard Long, George Maciunas, Franco Leidi, Lucien Clergue, Robert Smithson, Folke Dahlberg, Joan Miró and Manuel Alvarez Bravo. Publishing continued until 1998, when Marianne and Sune Nordgren, who worked on the publications together for 23 years, moved to England. In total about 150 titles were released during these years, in addition to the magazine also artist monographs, art theory, illustrated books and artists’ books. Among the first was a book on the art of record covers and two artist’s books by Richard Long and Susan Weil. Among the very last are books on Eric Grate, Otto G Carlsund, Lena Cronqvist and August Strindberg as a photographer. Many books were published in bilingual editions, where the Swedish was supplemented with English, German, French or Italian. Several books were also published in a bibliophile edition, in which the artist contributed with an original print or artwork. In 2009 the publishing started again and Kalejdoskop is now headed by Ellen, Isac and Amanda Nordgren.
